Hello, Melissa. Can you describe yourself in ten words, please?

Curious, adventurous, quirky, open-minded, creative and empathetic. An animal lover and seeker of joy in life!

You are a traveler. When did you start travelling and what was your first destination?

I’ve been traveling ever since I was 5 years old to Shanghai, China with my parents as most of my relatives still live there. But it wasn’t until I studied abroad in London during my third year of college that I really caught the “travel bug” and realized how much I loved traveling!

What destination is your favourite and why?

Japan is my favorite destination I’ve traveled to so far, with such a unique combination of ancient culture & traditions, breathtakingly beautiful landscapes & scenery, and the perfect picture of innovation & modernity. But perhaps above all else, what made me fall in love with Japan were the people. They are some of the kindest and most gracious people I’ve ever met while traveling. I love how thoughtful and considerate they are, and you can feel that respect permeate all aspects of life in Japan.

Do you have any traveling tips for people who would like to travel but are too afraid to do so?

The best advice I can give to those who would like to travel, but are too afraid to do so, is to just give it a try. “Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear”, and you are doing yourself a disservice if you are letting fear hold you back. I believe that you grow and learn the most about yourself when you push yourself outside of your comfort zone, & often what we are afraid of is what we most need to do. Ask yourself: what’s the worst that could happen? But also, what’s the best that could happen? More often than not, the benefits will greatly outweigh the negatives when you put it into perspective.

We can see on your Instagram that you were in Prague last year. Did you like it there? If so, what  place did you like the most?

Prague was such a beautiful city and one that I would definitely love to visit again. I was extremely charmed by Mala strana, or Lesser Town, and its many small cobble-stoned alleyways that were a dream to explore! I think that side of Prague was my favorite.

You love fashion as well. What do you think about Czech people and their style?

To be honest, I don’t think I was in Prague long enough to really get a true sense of the fashion scene there! From the people I did see walking along the streets, I did like their style as the weather was transitioning from summer to fall. I think the style there seemed more refined and subtle-chic, which I really liked.

What does fashion mean to you?

To me, fashion means the freedom to express yourself & share your creativity with the world. It’s more than just being trendy or wearing what’s “in”. It’s about creating your own style, and owning it. I love fashion because it allows you to be unapologetically you, without having to explain who you are or saying a word. You allow others to interpret who you are through your unique style.

If you had to choose just one current fashion trend you like the most, what trend would it be?

I love the trend of wearing pops of color and mixing different patterns!

Summer’s nearly over. Do you like summer or are you more of a winter person?

I am definitely more of a summer person and I’m so sad that summer is nearly over!! I just love the ease of being able to throw on a loose, breezy dress and call it a day in the summer vs. bundling up in so many layers during the winter!

What is your favourite summer outfit?

I love wearing flowy dresses or cute rompers in the summer! Give me everything with bright colors, floral patterns or fruity designs! I love matching that with espadrilles as well!

How do you take care of your Instagram? What apps do you use for planning posts (in case you do so) and editing photos?

I try to engage with my audience as much as I can on Instagram, and always try to respond to comments or DM’s left on my page! Posting consistently and sharing something of value to your audience is also super important. I mainly use UNUM to plan out the layout of my feed and make sure I don’t post two photos that are too similar next to each other! I also edit all my photos using Lightroom for desktop, and sometimes further tweak them on my phone using Snapseed and RNI Films. For Instagram Stories, I have been loving the Unfold app lately that allows you to seamlessly create beautiful, cohesive stories using one of their templates!

A good Instagram name is very important because the name is the first thing that people notice. Why “witandfolly”?

That’s a good question! I wish I had a super clever story behind how I came up with my Instagram name, but honestly, “witandfolly” wasn’t even my first choice – I came up with it from trial and error as all the names I really wanted were already taken!

But I did know I wanted my name to sound whimsical and mischievous, with a sense of spontaneity & wanderlust. I thought the words “wit” and “folly” helped describe my personality quite well and also the type of content I would be posting, so that’s what I ended up going with!

In these days, it is popular to be an influencer and we definitely think that you are an influencer. Do you consider yourself one as well?? What does being an influencer mean to you?

To be honest, I think the word “influencer” is often misused and has lost its true meaning amongst all the noise from those wanting to become “instafamous.” And I only consider myself an influencer if I can truly impact or make a difference with the content I share to my audience. People always ask: “how do you become an influencer?” And there are a lot of ebooks and guides out there now that are trying to teach people how to become an “influencer.” But I don’t think it’s something that you can just become by following a step-by-step list of instructions. It isn’t even something that you should aspire to be as the end result. Rather, it is a product from sharing your story and passion with others; and when other people can relate to what you have to share and believe in what you’re doing, that’s when you are able to start “influencing” others. To me, being an influencer means having the ability to show others your point of view, and to be able to persuade them to support your passions or causes as well. It isn’t about how many followers or likes you can get, but about the genuine connections and meaningful relationships you form with your audience, who you know will support you no matter what.

The last question: What do you think about our project InfluencersRE?

I think InfluerncersRE is a great project that brings together a diverse group of influencers and bloggers. I love that it’s about connecting and forming a community of like-minded individuals who are all passionate about something!

Thank you for your time Melissa. Have a nice day.
