Interview with Krystine: “I’ve traveled to over 20 countries and 60 cities!”

Kristyne is a passionate traveler who decided to travel the world and explore its beauties. She is active on social media and manages her blog “dreamerescapes”. Escape with her and read about her traveling tips and experiences right now in this interview.

Hi Krystine, you had a successful food blog full of scrumptious recipes, what made you move on from food to travel?

Healthy living and fitness is still a huge interest of mine, but after graduating university and moving up the corporate ladder, I wasn’t able to put much focus into my Instagram account during that time. My priority right now is seeing as much of the world as I can, so my Instagram account reflects that.

You have decided to quit your day job and travel for a living. That is a very bold move. How long were you planning this change or was it spontaneous?

I had planned to do an around-the-world trip for about two years. The major factors impacting my decision were how much I needed to save, where I wanted to go, and the point in my career where I felt it was safe to take a break. I wanted to make sure I had enough experience under my belt just in case I wanted to come back to a corporate career.

Your photos are incredibly dreamy and beautiful – can you share your photo editing secrets with us?

Not many secrets to share, other than practice, practice, practice! This is really the only way your photos will improve. Even in just four short months of taking travel photos, my editing and photography skills have improved so much. Experiment with different lighting, different poses, different editing styles. Find your style and you’ll find something that resonates with you.

You have traveled to a lot of places so far. Is there a destination that has a special place in your heart? Or a place that you keep coming back to?

My all-time favorite destination that I will never get tired of visiting is Hawaii! It is where I got married in 2016 and it holds a very special place in my heart. It has so many beautiful spots and each island vibes its own unique way.

Are you keeping track of how many countries you’ve visited so far? How many do you still have on your list?

Since July 2018, I’ve traveled to 20 new countries and 60 cities. Before this trip, I’ve visited maybe about 20 countries. By July 2019 I hope to visit about 40 more countries. So in total about 80 countries! I use the PolarSteps app to keep track of what places I go to!

Considering you spend your life living out of the suitcase, can you share your packing secrets with us? What are your must haves that you would never travel without?

My packing secrets…I don’t have any! I’m horrible at packing light, actually. I have one big suitcase that has about 15 dresses, 2 pairs of shorts, 2 t-shirts, 2 toiletry bags, 2 pairs of shoes, and a bag of underwear and socks. I prefer wearing dresses because I don’t have to think about matching my tops and bottoms! I would never travel without my skincare products. Traveling wreaks havoc on your skin and so I go to great lengths to minimize damage.

Do you have any tips on how to beat  jet lag? Do you stick to a beauty routine when traveling?

Plan your itinerary so that you minimize the number of times you go back and forth switching time zones. Drink lots of water and unsweetened tea. Try and adjust your sleep schedule to that of your destination. Take your vitamins and eat your vegetables! I stick strictly to my skin care routine – always wash your face, tone, and moisturize. And don’t even think about going outside without sunscreen on your face.

Given the fact that you have traveled all over the world and experienced many different cultures – what is your favourite cuisine? How do you like to eat on your travels? Are you adventurous and trying local delicacies from the street vendors? Or do you tend to stick to restaurants?

My favourite cuisine is Thai and Japanese! When I travel, I always try to eat the one thing that the country is famous for, for example pizza in Italy or chocolate in Switzerland. But I hardly ever eat at restaurants, I actually prefer to stay in accommodations that has a kitchen so I can cook myself. It’s so much healthier and saves so much money.

After traveling as much as you have – can you see yourself coming back to a normal 9-5 job? Or will you keep on traveling until you get fed up? If that is even possible?

I actually really enjoyed many aspects of my 9-5 job, so I don’t rule it out for now. Having a routine is actually enjoyable at times. I also dream of owning my own business one day. I’m still trying to figure out exactly what I want.  For now, I’ll stick to traveling.

Your life seems like the ultimate dream to many people. What would your advice be to anyone who decides to follow in your footsteps and leave their regular job to travel the world?

My advice to you if you want to pursue full time travel is to plan for it. It may take years, and there will be tons of obstacles, but it is never impossible. There are also so many different ways to make money while traveling, for example, working on a cruise ship, or teaching English abroad. Leave all those options open to yourself!
